Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
HR 2863 Conference Report FY 2006 Defense Appropriations
December 20, 2005 -
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps States assist low income households meet the cost of home heating and cooling. This winter, home heating fuel costs are expected to increase $403 per household and $611 for natural gas.
FY 2006 Defense Appropriations conference report would provide assistance.
• Provides $2 billion in emergency funding for FY 2006 to provide immediate
help
• Provides funding based on emergency needs which will allow the government
to provide assistance this winter. The remainder of the funds will be allocated
based on the existing formula that will provide assistance to states with high
cooling costs.
• Provides 5% from ANWR revenues for LIHEAP over 30 years ($50 million a
year)
• LIHEAP helps low income individuals pay for their skyrocketing energy costs
