Alexander Urges House to Pass Bipartisan FISA Bill

February 12, 2008 -

“The Senate’s bipartisan vote to update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act shows that we grasped the seriousness of the threat against our country and took action.”

WASHINGTON – Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today released the following statement on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) legislation that passed the Senate today by a vote of 68 to 29:

“The Senate’s bipartisan vote to update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act shows that we grasped the seriousness of the threat against our country and took action. The legislation we approved respects the privacy and constitutional rights of Americans while also updating FISA so our intelligence community can effectively monitor terrorists. We will work with the House to reach a prompt resolution so the president gets this bill before the current temporary FISA legislation expires on February 15.”
