FRIST PRAISES SENATE PASSAGE OF DEFICIT REDUCTION PACKAGE, DENOUNCES DEMOCRATIC OBSTRUCTION

WASHINGTON, DC – Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) today made the following statement after Senate passage of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005:

"I'm proud of the work done in this bill to control growth in federal spending and drive down the deficit. The measures in this legislation reflect sound policies that will maximize program efficiency and effectiveness while controlling increases in federal spending. This is a good first step to putting America back on a sustainable path to fiscal responsibility.

“I condemn the maneuvers of my Democratic colleagues who put partisan politics ahead of proven fiscal policy. Using arcane technicalities they stubbornly delayed final passage of this legislation, and opted to declare a false, hollow and short-lived political victory while endangering millions of dollars in federal funding, including support for Hurricane Katrina victims and federal welfare programs.

“While the Democrats continue to thwart the will of the majority of Americans who want us to reduce federal spending, the Republican-led Congress will continue governing with meaningful solutions by addressing the issues that matter most to mainstream Americans.”
