Alexander: Bipartisan Bill Good Start Toward Stabilizing Housing Market and Jump-Starting Economy

Bill Includes Tax Credit to Encourage Home Buying

April 2, 2008 -

“This compromise bill does not include a provision I strongly opposed that would have turned mortgages into junk bonds and cost Tennesseans $120 more a month on their mortgage payments.”

WASHINGTON – Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, made the following remarks regarding compromise housing legislation:

“The bipartisan housing legislation announced today is a good start toward jump-starting the economy, stabilizing the housing market, and giving every homeowner tax relief. I’m especially glad that the Isakson-Alexander tax credit proposal, which will encourage Americans to purchase a home, has been included in the package. This compromise bill does not include a provision I strongly opposed that would have turned mortgages into junk bonds and cost Tennesseans $120 more a month on their mortgage payments. Today’s compromise is a good example of what can be achieved when we put playpen politics aside and focus on finding solutions.”
